Gladstone's Library | the UK's finest residential library

Read, write, relax and become inspired

Gladstone's Library is unique.

It is a residential library and meeting place which is dedicated to dialogue, debate and learning for open-minded individuals and groups, who are looking to explore pressing questions and to pursue study and research in an age of distraction and easy solutions.

As a completely independent institution and a registered charity, we receive no external funding. Our regular income is derived entirely from those who use our facilities, so whether staying overnight, enjoying a delicious lunch or attending an event or course, it all helps to pay our ever-increasing bills!

This institution pays tribute to William Gladstone. It is Britain's finest residential library, and its only Prime Ministerial library. It was founded by the great Victorian statesman himself and, following his death in 1898, became the national memorial to his life and work as well as one of the few Grade I-listed buildings in North Wales.

We are currently closed due to the national crisis with Covid-19 Coronavirus but please follow us on social media for fascinating facts about the Library and ways to keep yourself entertained during the lockdown! Also, we have so much information about our collections on the website, you can find out more here or read more About Us.

At Gladstone's Library, we have an evolving programme of courses and events that keep us connected with a wide range of writers and thinkers - see our Events & Courses page for further information. Our events programme has been put on hold until the end of June but we are working hard to rearrange event dates where possible. We will be in touch if you have tickets booked for any of our events up until the end of June.
